How can this be possible? It looks like it’s only a few years old,” Ahqulieah exclaimed as she gazed at the 1200 year old spindle-whorl stone sitting in her hand.

Descending fog, a raging storm and a car blazing in a towering, fiery inferno had attempted to prevent her from reaching the tiny Kirkwall Archaeological Museum where this whorl stone was kept. The archaeologist assisting her now had also struggled against the unprecedented blockages. A shaman as well as an archaeologist, she had been totally absorbed by Ahqulieah’s story and her recounting of the whorl stone’s place at its centre.

“Yes, it’s intriguing isn’t it,” she declared now as she pointed to other whorl stones of a similar age displayed in the cabinet behind them. “As you can see those have aged in a more obvious manner being much darker in colour, uneven and worn away. This one however is very pale in colour, perfectly smooth and even the message incised is still clearly legible. You could well believe it is only six or seven years old,” she suggested as she raised an eyebrow and watched Ahqulieah.

Though Ahqulieah’s story had gripped her from the beginning, it was the reaction of Ahqulieah’s body to the whorl stone the instant she had touched it that most intrigued her. She was very well aware of the power that existed within the memory of a stone and its potential to invoke ancient memories within a person. This whorl stone’s memory had unleashed one of the most powerful reactions she had ever witnessed. She had watched Ahqulieah’s physiology change before her as her presence seemed to expand instantly and a dance of light particles began to occur throughout her aura as if a great and lengthy conversation with the whorl stone had just begun. Now, as she watched her ashen face, she knew a powerful transformation was occurring, one which would undoubtedly unveil something of the utmost importance to the next step of her journey to reunite with the man she called the Magus.

“Thank you so much. I really cannot express what holding this whorl stone has meant to me,” Ahqulieah uttered quietly as she reluctantly handed it back and followed the archaeologist to the exit.

“If you need anything else please do call me,” the archaeologist suggested kindly as she watched Ahqulieah leave the museum, “and please do let me know what happens,” she added.

A searing pain was drowning Ahqulieah. It had begun from the moment she had touched the whorl stone. The bile rising in her throat as the pain intensified was now accompanied by extreme nausea gripping her stomach. A memory began taking form as it swirled through her mind. Staggering across the road towards the ruinous remains of the Earl of Orkney’s palace, an invisible thread of energy drew her forward while the memory became more distinguishable.

The wind howled through the intimidating building looming before her as torrential rain ravaged the sky. Her heart was screaming as the memory became clear. In another age,
